Pandemic pet names: COVID has heavy influence

By lee cleveland - July 21, 2022

Many pet dogs and cats born or adopted in 2020 have been tagged with pandemic-related names by their owners, according to a recent poll by Rover, the world’s largest pet sitting/dog walking service.

“Generally what we see is what is going on in the world around us is directly reflected in the names we give our pets,” said Kristin Sandberg, a Rover spokesperson.

“Given that this year has been a global pandemic, it has been one of the most interesting in terms of pet names.”

The poll surveyed about 1,000 pet families, a third of which got a pet during the pandemic.

Names trending upward are Covi, Rona, Corona, and Covie. Honorable mentions include COVID and Fauci.

Yes, don’t be surprised to meet a pet named after Dr. Anthony Fauci, the world’s top virus expert.

But, it doesn’t stop there….

In Philadelphia, for example, because the Coronavirus quarantine has given some folks a sweet tooth and others an increased desire for boos, pet names such as Sprinkles, Cake, Cheesecake, Coconut, Cake, Jellybeans, Porter, Stout, Brewer, and Hops are trending in the City of Brotherly Love.

… And, of course, who can forget the fictional Philadelphia boxer who remains the most popular mythical athlete ever? The pet name Rocky always trends in Philly.

Nationally, Bella and Max are the trendiest names for female and male dogs, respectively. And for cats, Luna and Oliver, for females and males, respectively, topped the list.
